I show the numbers in most of the pictures with my hands facing the camera directly.  I do it so you can get a better idea of how the handshape looks.  Your palm orientation should be at a "natural angle."  Try this:  Lift your hands into the air in front of your torso so that you look a bit like a Praying Mantis.  Now, keeping your hands in the air, adjust your palm orientation until you feel the least stress and the most comfort. Find that "comfortable position." Don't worry if it is pointing straight ahead or not.  Keep your dominant hand in the air and drop your non-dominant hand. Now you are ready to start doing your numbers. If your local instructor wants a certain palm orientation, by all means, do it his or her way so you can get the grade you want out of class.
